Tips For Maintaining Your Sewer And Septic Systems

In our homes we have to deal with a lot of different things.  One of the main things that we need to deal with that we don’t want to talk about is our waste and garbage.  If we don’t tend to this and allow things to back up or get out of control it can cause major health and maintenance issues.

For many, thinking about sewer & drain cleaning is not top on their priorities list.  When we put things into our sinks or flush them, we assume they go away and there are no issues.  However, some items are not designed to go into these areas and if they do, can cause major issues.

Don’t flush dippers and other similar items

There are going to be times when we think since it has poo in it, we can flush it.  Dippers are not designed to be flushed.  They are too large, and they will get clogged into the pipes.  Other items such as paper towels, sanitary napkins and similar products are designed to be tossed and not flushed.  Learn how to properly dispose of them by reading the packaging of the product.

Don’t let pipes freeze

Another thing that we don’t commonly think of is the weather.  When we live in an area that gets cold or if we get a sudden cold snap, the water in our pipes may freeze.  If this happens it could cause them to crack or even bust.  To help avoid this, you want to turn on your water slightly so it can flow through your pipes.  Typically, flowing water won’t be in a position to freeze.

Have a professional look at it

At the end of the day, don’t try to fix issues that have become clogged.  You want to hire a professional to come in and fix the problem.  They will have the tools and skills to do it correctly.
